A 31-year-old professional boxer has tragically lost his life in a shooting incident in Los Angeles, with police now on the hunt for multiple suspects involved in the crime.

Mylik Birdsong, a welterweight fighter, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital on Sunday evening after being shot outside his home in the Florence-Graham area. According to the Los Angeles police, Birdsong was standing outside when a dark-colored SUV drove by and opened fire.

In a desperate attempt to reach safety, Birdsong ran toward his residence, but two assailants from the vehicle pursued him, continuing to shoot. “The victim then ran towards his residence [when] two suspects from the vehicle started chasing him while shooting at him,” an LAPD spokesperson told KTLA 5 News.

Birdsong ultimately collapsed in his driveway, where first responders found him with seven gunshot wounds to his torso. The attackers fled the scene in the dark SUV, and as of now, they remain unidentified.

Though not widely known in the boxing world, Birdsong boasted an impressive record of 15 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw, with 10 knockouts. He was scheduled to fight Armenian Gor Yeritsyan (18-1) on October 26 at LA’s Commerce Casino.

Just a day prior to the shooting, Birdsong shared a heartwarming post on Instagram featuring his new puppy, expressing joy over his latest pet. “Good little girl,” he wrote, holding the grey and white puppy with striking heterochromia
